"Call on Christmas Eve"

00:00 / 03:52

Hi everyone!

Congratulations, you've successfully scanned the QR code and made it to the song! Seemed easier than sending out a CD.

Merry Christmas! Above is an audio player that should let you hear "Call on Christmas Eve." As stated in the card, this isn't your standard Christmas song, but more of a story set a Christmas time. Like Die Hard, but with less Alan Rickman. (But Die Hard is still a Christmas movie, and I am willing to Die Hard on that hill.)

I tried a few different Christmas song ideas before writing this one. Writing something classic and funny like "Two Front Teeth" or "Grandma Got Run Over By A Reindeer" felt a bit tone deaf, and writing something snarky about politics or COVID also felt wrong. So instead, I started thinking about what would make the world seem right again for Christmas. For me, that was re-forging old connections and getting answers to questions that were always stuck in the back of my mind. Who doesn't love closure? Using that as a springboard, I pictured being back in your hometown for the holidays, making a phone call on Christmas Eve and asking an old friend if they'd be willing to walk and spell everything out. The lyrics are below :)

Finally, a lot of work and money goes into everyone song I make, and while this one was written and recorded quicker that most, it's still a labor of love. I wanted to do something special this year, and I'm so thrilled I could send out these cards with a song, but it didn't come without expenses. If you're feeling charitable and would like to support a musician, I would be humbled and honored by your belief and generosity. The best ways to support me are by buying merch (I ship!), buying my music on BandCamp and sharing my music with your friends if you like it. If you a soul who needs not for material goods and just wants to spread some joy, Venmo to @henryplayspiano is deeply appreciated as well. If this song or any of my songs bring you joy, I hope you'll consider supporting me.

Be safe, be well, and keep being curious!

Best,

Henry

Call on Christmas Eve

First of all I can’t believe

How short half a decade seems

It sounded like to me an awful lot

I heard you moved out of state

I guess med school couldn’t wait

I’m stuck here with my kindergarten thoughts

They always wander off

I hate to do this bolt out of the blue

But I’m home for Christmas

Are you too?

There’s so much we left unresolved

That’s why I called

CHORUS

Everything is lights and buzz

It won’t snow, it never does

But you said something

As you left

I’m still wondering what that was

Can you meet me for a walk?

All I want for Christmas is to talk

Second off, you don’t like gifts

Charity’s for communists

I got you something anyway

Get over it (Get over it)

The postal service needs some love

So I can ship, push comes to shove

But I don’t know what package fits a wish

Wishes like I wish you’d told me

I swear I will not judge

This year’s been way too nuts

To hold a grudge

CHORUS

Everything is lights and buzz

It won’t snow, it never does

But you said something

As you left

I’m still wondering what that was

Trade me all your whens for whys

Yankee swap our separate sides

Certainty’s in short supply

I was hoping you’d provide

Can you meet me for a walk?

All I want for Christmas is to talk

BRIDGE

I’m always pulling at my sweater

Tangled in loose threads

Come help me

Make a string of a big letters

To celebrate the end

Walk me through from A to Z

Maybe we’ll wake up to see

CHORUS

Every ending in it’s place

Every question mark erased

Every stocking filled with memories

Of who we used to be

Could you meet me at the dock?

Every secret still a shock

Behind a door that doesn’t lock

And 1000 skipping rocks

But I’d settle for a walk

All I want for Christmas is to talk
